Steve Sears is a self-taught photographer who initially desired to capture memories of his wilderness adventures, and was later inspired to take the art to new levels by exposure to the work of the late Galen Rowell. He has been shooting photos of the natural world for about 18 years. The majority of the images in Steve's library were shot with Canon 35mm film camera's, though a select few were shot in medium format with a Mamiya 645 Pro TL. Typically, he uses filters lightly: A polarizer to remove glare and allow for color saturation, warming filters to remove, for example, the blue cast found in open shade, and graduated neutral-density filters to close the gap between extreme ranges of light in a given scene. He recently (Summer 2011) began shooting digitally and has fallen in love with HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography which, in a nutshell, is a process involving shooting a series of photographs of the same composition, all at different exposures, and then merging them using special software. As its name implies, the resulting photograph includes an incredible range of light and tones.
Prior to going digital, almost all of Steve’s images we’re shot on Fuji Velvia 50 or 100 speed transparency film. Velvia is still the standard for color film; it produces vibrant, saturated images and is exceptionally fine grained, perfect for sharp enlargements.
